FBLA Community Service Dodgeball Tournament: Success

As a community service event this year, FBLA chose to do a dodge ball tournament to raise money for less fortunate people in our community in conjunction with the Upper Darby Fire Department. All proceeds from the tournament are being used to purchase food and gifts to give to the underprivileged families for the upcoming holiday season. Grace Muldoon and Kyle Johnson organized, and implemented the project. The tournament proved successful with seven teams, dozens of others came to watch. All donations totaled up to over two hundred and fifty dollars, which will be donated and used over the next few weeks. FBLA would like to thank all participants, and we'd also like to congratulate  Anyone else who would like to make a donation can see Grace Muldoon, Kyle Johnson, or Mr. Mahoney in room 204.

Congratulations Kristine Tassanapark and Kyle Johnson for being announced as October's Rotary Students of the Month. Keep up the great work, we can't wait to see what great things you'll be doing during the rest of your senior year!

AN UNHEARD OF JUMP

At yesterday's competition the Marching Royals accomplished something unbelievable: their competition score jumped NINE WHOLE POINTS! With lots of hard work, they were able to go from the 85.15 they earned last week, to a solid 94.00 this week, earning them the highest overall score in their division for the whole region! The energy coming off the field was contagious, and the whole crowd jumped to their feet to give the Marching Roysls a standing ovation! The Royals have two more weeks to clean and polish their show before their next competition at Hatboro Horsham. Please come out and support these lost souls as they continue their journey this season.

Dootleen Joseph leading the girls' varsity race

This Saturday the Girls' and Boys' Cross Country team traveled to Rose Tree Park to compete in this year's Delco Cross Country Championship, which consisted of twenty-two other schools residing in the Delaware County area. Stakes were high as the beloved UD teams faced off with their rival schools such as Bonner/Prendie, Cardinal O'hara, Haverford, etc.

The chilly weather took no toll on the teams as they pushed through to complete the difficult, muscle tiring Rose Tree course of 3.1 miles.

Two Consecutive Wins for the Marching Royals!

This weekend, the Upper Darby Marching Royals earned first place at their competition at West Chester East. They earned a score of 79.65, but were penalized two points for being under time. However, they crushed their competition, Garnet Valley, who had a score of 71.9. The Marching Royals show concept this year is lost souls! Members enter the field in long, dark black cloaks, and are trying to discover where they belong throughout the show. Please come support them at the football games during half time!

Royals Take On Raiders: Who Was Victorious?

Royals Take On Raiders!

Upper Darby football recently faced a school with one of the top sports programs in the state on September 25th at Memorial Stadium. The lights were on, the crowd was cheering and tension grew with each touchdown,  movement, and throw. The hearts of the people on the stands were racing and only increased in speed with time. Each minute faster and faster as the opposing team slowly caught up.

The crying and anger that came afterwards when students saw their school lose was what really made the night. The crying and angry faces came from Ridley students after Upper Darby showed them what team really runs Delaware County. Royals won with an impressive 32-29. It was a close game but, Ridley's Raiders were no match for the talent and royalty of Upper Darby High School. Way to go Royals!

Kristine Tassanapark and Ashley Humphries

Kristine Tassanapark and Ashley Humphries love Upper Darby High School, and it shows in the work that they do with The Royal Revolution. The Royal Revolution emphasizes to students at the high school the importance of pride in the high school and pride in each other. These upperclassmen epitomize what it means to be an Upper Darby Royal and encourage their classmates to do the same. The high school continues to be a better place because of their efforts and leadership.

UD Preseason Kicks Off and a word with Coach Gentile

As we end summer and near the school year, preseason for fall sports has kicked off, today, Monday August 17th. All fall sports are meeting at UD today to check in and get started.

Although today is the official start of the preseason, some teams have been working throughout the offseason. I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Gentile, head coach of the football team, about the offseason and more.

Gentile stated the team has been working out in the weight room since February, and around the first week of June started helmets and shoulder pads practice, 3-4 days a week.

In regards to being prepared Gentile said "We have a great group of seniors this year that did very well on the offensive side of the ball, and we are ready to get things moving."

Gentile has also been working the past few months on some new strategies, on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. "We're working on subtle changes in order to improve, polishing off certain plays, adding in some new ones, and making the game interesting.

My final question for Mr. Gentile was "What would you tell UD's student section, and all of the crowd for that matter to expect for this season?"
"Expect a very exciting and successful season, and we [the team] also ask they [student section] be there every game possible to support and help the team in tough games, because it's people like them, their enthusiasm and excitement, which helps motivate the team."

Lastly be sure to follow UD Football on twitter @UDFootball for updates on games and team activities.
***Additionally YOU are deciding who this season's student section General is, log onto UD Football's twitter page and retweet who YOU want to lead us, voting ends Sunday, August 30th.

There are many competitions such as, Art, Poetry, Short film, Knowledge tests, Improv, and much more. Many schools come to represent their diversity and talent. Fortunately, in its first year, Upper Darby made its talent known. Our team won many awards. Junior, Sajal Khan, won third place in a knowledge test and is going to nationals. Waleed Muhammad was awarded first place in 2-D Art and second place in Improv and now qualify for nationals in both competitions. The overall experience was amazing for everyone and we cannot wait for Upper Darby to represent at next year's MIST!
